The minimum setup involves registering your printer and getting an e-mail address for it. The installation routine for the printer adds an icon to your desktop that will take you to the ePrintCenter site. The two features are related to the extent that they both depend on the printer connecting directly to the Web and that you set both up using the same HP ePrintCenter Web site. In addition to the ePrint feature I mentioned earlier, the D110a offers another neat trick: direct printing from the Web using Web apps. Most photos, however, were equivalent to what you would expect from drugstore prints. I also saw a lack of dark black, which can give color photos with dark areas a hazy look, and in a black and white photo I saw different color tints at different shades of gray. In one photo of a fruit bowl, the apples had a flattened look, which comes from a loss of subtle shading that gives the eye clues to three-dimensionality. Photos in my tests were true photo quality, but in some cases just barely.

It's even good enough for a professional graphics artist to consider using. The graphics are easily good enough for any home or business need up to and including output going to an important client who you need to impress with your professionalism.

The only issue I saw was a loss of 1-pixel-wide light-colored lines printed on a black background, a problem that shows up with most printers. Graphics quality was superb, with vibrant color, even fills, and crisp edges for lines and text. As with any inkjet, I wouldn't use the D110 for anything that needs to look fully professional, like a resume, but unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, the text is perfectly acceptable for most business use. None, including highly stylized fonts with thick strokes, needed more than 12 points to pass both tests. However, more than half qualified as highly readable at 8 points, and most passed both thresholds at 10 points. None of the fonts in our text tests qualified as well formed at any size below 6 points, and fewer than half qualified at 8 points.

Text quality on my tests was just a tad below par, but photos were a match for most inkjet MFPs, and graphics quality was among the best available. The S405 printed photos in less than half the time. The D110a's photo speed is also on the slow side, averaging 2:13 for a 4-by-6 and 5:46 for an 8-by-10. In comparison, the NX515 took only a little over half as much time, at 8:32, and the Lexmark Interpret S405 ($129 direct, ) took 12:47.

I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at a total of 15 minutes 58 seconds. The D110a's speed is best described as tolerable but not fast by today's standards, particularly compared with the NX515. For our standard test suite, I connected by USB cable, since the printer doesn't offer an Ethernet port.

According to HP, it also ships with a full set of drivers and software for Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit), Windows XP SP2 or higher, and Mac OS X v 10.4 and higher. I installed the D110a on a system running Windows Vista.

You can then run the automated setup routine from disc. Physical setup is typical for an inkjet MFP, consisting of little more than finding a spot for the 7.1- by 17.4- by 15.9-inch (HWD) printer and loading the two ink cartridges and paper. If you print and copy just 20 pages per day you'll have to load paper every four days.

The most significant limitation, however, is the stingy input tray, which can hold only 80 sheets.

There's no automatic document feeder for scanning and no automatic duplexer for printing (although there is a manual duplex feature in the driver). Similarly, for home offices, what limits the D110a to light duty use is a notable lack of office-centric features. However, the printer can read only SD, MMC, and Memory Stick Duo formats, and the screen is only 2.4 inches. Photocentric features for home use, for example, include printing from memory cards and letting you preview photos on a color LCD screen. The printer cuts some corners, presumably to help keep the price down.
